Mold and Deckle

Folio, Quarto, Octavo, Duodecimo, Sextodecimo . . .

 

In a folio, chain lines are VERTICAL. In a quarto, chain lines are HORIZONTAL

Chain lines are widely spaced lines visible in the texture of laid paper, made by wire mesh at the bottom of the tray in which paper is made. 

Wire lines are the closer set lines in laid paper and run perpendicular to chain lines.
