Information about Visiting Special Collections and the SC Historical Society Archives Reading Room
Special Collections holds a variety of guidebooks and other literature documenting sites and events considered to be "historic". While we will be examining many of these during the class archives and library visit on March 28, you are welcome to visit the Special Collections reading room to spend more time and conduct additional research. The above painting in the background is a portion of Norma Mazo's "Payday" which depicts African American longshoremen, who had loaded and unloaded ships in Charleston since before the American Civil War, lining up to receive their pay at the United Fruit Company dock at the end of Laurens Street on the Copper River. The painting is held by the College of Charleston Libraries' Special Collections and Archives.
