AAST 300: Understanding School Desegregation: Legal, Educational and Psychological Impacts (Brown): Primary Sources: Oral Histories

Began as a part of Francis Marion University’s "Universities Studying Slavery" initiative, the Pee Dee Oral History Project collects historical experiences, insights, and perspectives of those from and living in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. Initially focusing on race relations in the Pee Dee, the collection includes accounts of the hewn-timber cabins, sharecropping, the Mt. Zion Rosenwald School, the Civil Rights Movement, military service, school segregation and integration, and the university’s history. The collection includes audio and video interviews as well as transcripts of the interviews. University faculty and students conducted the interviews.

The Jewish Heritage Collection Oral Histories, archived in Special Collections as the College of Charleston's Addlestone Library, offer an inside perspective on the lives of Jewish residents of South Carolina’s cities and small towns. The majority of interviews focus on first- and second-generation Americans of the twentieth century, and address topics such as immigration, assimilation, antisemitism, Jewish/African-American relations, making a living, and religious life.
