Selecting and Using Keywords

Search Tips

Library resources don't work like Google.
You cannot type in a complete sentence and expect to get an answer. Instead, library resources require the use of keywords. Write out a question you want to ask, then pick out just the significant words - those are your keywords.

Next, continue to build your collection of keywords.
Use a thesaurus if you need to think of synonyms. Also, think of words that are related to your topic and fit contextually. Make sure your keywords are nouns whenever possible.

Finally, you combine these terms using AND, OR, or NOT.
These are Search Operators and tell the library resource whether the search results should include both terms, either term or one term but not the other. Pro tip! Putting quotation marks around a search phrase will find articles that contain that exact phrase in its text.
