Information about Visiting Special Collections and the SC Historical Society Archives Reading Room
In this capstone seminar, students will create a research question, identify and analyze relevant primary and secondary sources, and write a 20-30 page seminar paper on a topic of their choice connected to the history of travel and travelers in East Asia. From Marco Polo to the missionaries, tourists, and businesspeople of the modern period; from ports like Guangzhou, Manila, and Nagasaki in the Age of Sail to the air and seaports of the present, visitors and sojourners open a window on social history, the economy, war, culture, gender, and many other themes of Asian and world history, creating ample scope for students to define their own research interests. Readings for this course will center on China and the Chinese diaspora, with excursions into Japan and other parts of Asia.
