This guide contains links to dozens of 100% online primary and secondary resources to assist students conducting historical research without any access to physical archives or libraries. While most can be freely accessed, some may require a university account or paid subscription to view all content.

Contact Us

We welcome inquiries from all users, regardless of affiliation. Researchers can get in touch with Special Collections reference professionals using the contact us form on our website. Staff are also available Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm via telephone (843-953-8016) and email (specialcollections@cofc.edu).

Researchers can also explore collections via our Discovery Service, the Lowcountry Digital Library, or through various Research Guides

Visitors can access our Reading Room, located on the third floor of the Addlestone Library (205 Calhoun Street), Monday- Friday from 9:00am-noon and 1:00pm-4:00pm. Please note the reading room is closed to visitors from noon – 1:00pm every day. 

To enter the Addlestone Library, CofC students, alumni, faculty, and staff must have their current CofC ID. All other visitors are required to register at the main entrance. Please note: a photo ID is required to register as a visitor.  More information for visitors is available at https://libguides.charleston.edu/addlestone

In the reading room, guidelines for safety, order, and collections handling must be followed at all times.

Accessing the Lowcountry Digital Library

 

 

Use the search bar at the top of the screen to narrow down search results. The collections are searchable by subject, title, page content, title, or simple search. Don't forget to properly cite each source and pay attention to which institution it belongs to.
