HIST 301: Colonial America (Slater): Home

Course Description

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Indigenous America and the colonial period of North America during early contact with a larger focus on British North America, 1607-1763. Students will be expected to read a range of academic sources, both primary and secondary, attend lectures, and engage in conversation.  Topics include Native Americans, New France, New Spain, New England, Colonial Chesapeake, Mid Atlantic, and southern colonies, Africans and enslavement, religious diversity, economies/trade, gender and sexuality, and culminating with the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The objective is to understand the complex interconnectedness of British Colonial America up to the eve of the American Revolution. Students will complete a large research project for this course.
