Marine Microplastic Pollution: Remediation & Mitigation

Guidance and key resources for doing academic research on microplastics in marine ecosystems

Remediation & Mitigation

Many organizations have implemented monitoring programs or conducted extensive research in order to better understand microplastics role in marine ecosystems. Learn more about the ongoing efforts to remediate and mitigate marine microplastic pollution using the information below.

Citizen Science based programs:

Citizen science, also known as community science, is a unique way of engaging community members in the pursuit of scientific research. Citizen science typically involves data collection and/or analysis by members of the general public whom have been educated and trained by professional scientists or researchers.

Citizen science has proven itself a useful tool in increasing the scope and understanding of marine microplastics pollution. Many organizations have developed and implemented such programs around the world, many of which are ongoing in an effort to produce long-term datasets. See below for some examples of microplastic-related citizen science projects:

Mitigation through Legislation and Policy

Many countries have implemented policy framework in an effort to mitigate marine microplastic pollution and prevent further plastic from entering the environment.
