ENGL 299 (Frazier): Research Tips to Remember

Research Techniques Suggested by your Librarian

In our library research session, we suggested:

  • Use a variety of sources;
  • Experiment with keyword combinations;
  • Use Filters to fine-tune your results;
  • Use the thesaurus in the database to identify variations on your keywords;
  • Use Google Scholar (natural language searching) and link it to your library sources;
  • Limit Internet searches by domain (example was .gov);
  • "Reverse Engineer" Wikipedia (example was Nella Larsen's wikipedia entry);
  • When searching the Internet, remember to Fact Check your source with techniques such as Lateral Reading (example used was Kip and Alice Rhinelander);
  • Google Scholar also allows you to search Case Law, as well as articles (Rhinelander case);
  • Search Specialized Databases (Example was LGBTQ+).

 the Urban Institute's Do No Harm Guide: Applying Equity Awareness in Data Visualization recommends that racial and ethnic categories include “another race”, “additional groups”, “all other self-descriptions”, “people identifying as other or multiple races”, “identity not listed”, and “identity not listed in the survey”.
