CofC LibApps Best Practices: Common Bootstrap Cards

Guidelines for keeping LibGuides, LibCal, and LibAnswers content fresh.

How to use

Use these by mapping to them directly, or by making a copy. If you make a copy, you can then customize the source code to create your own box.

Mapping Directly to an Existing Card

  • To map directly, add a new box to your guide and select Reuse Existing Box. Select the Best Practices Guide, then look for the box you want on the Common Bootstrap Cards page.
  • Bootstrap cards look nice as a floating box (invisible border). You can change this setting once the box appears on your page. Click the edit button (pencil icon) in the top left corner, then check Floating Box.

Creating a New Bootstrap Card

  • First, add an existing Bootstrap card to your guide. This will be easier than starting from scratch. Follow the instructions above with one important exception. When you add the existing box, make a copy of the box instead of mapping to the original, so that you can edit it.
  • Now, modify the box to create your own custom card. Edit the Rich Text using the edit link in the bottom right. Click on the image to select it, then delete that image and add your own (see below for help on images). Link the image to the same place you plan to link the button.
  • While still in the editing box, change the brief description, as well.
  • To change the button text, you will need to open the source code. Click the Source button in the editing pane. Source code button
  • Code similar to this will display:

<div class="card">

<div class="card-body">

<h5 class="card-title"><a href="https://libanswers.charleston.edu/faq/316223" target="_blank"><img alt="Ask Us" loading="lazy" src="https://libapps.s3.amazonaws.com/customers/1839/images/PLACES_TO_STUDY.png" style="width: 100%;" /></a></h5>

<p>Get information on where to study in Addlestone Library<span id="s-lg-guide-description" style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></p>

<p><a class="btn btn-primary" href="https://libanswers.charleston.edu/faq/316223" target="_blank">Places to Study</a>&nbsp;</p>

</div>

</div>

  • Change these parts of the code:
    • Change the hyperlink for both the picture and the button.

    • Change the button text.

Making a New Picture for Your Card

Bootstrap card images should be sized to 1080x1080 pixels. You can find existing card images in the shared Image Manager Library (folder called Bootstrap Cards). Many of these images are also in the Canva file linked below. You can use this file as a template to make your own images.
